  21.    Dave Haynie told me that the speed increase would be about 20%. When
  22. using SysInfo as an indicator of processor speed, tests I made indicated
  23. that the A3000UX I have at home, equipped with a 25 MHz 68030 and static
  24. column RAMs only, performs at "103%" the speed of the A3000 comparison
  25. system. Whereas the A3000 I have at the office, which is equipped with the
  26. same type of CPU and page mode RAM, only performs at "83%".

  31.    I can confirm this. But take care, some computer dealers mixed chip
  32. types (at least mine did). As far as I can tell, the operating system
  33. does not test if all the RAM chips are of static column type. What it
  34. does is turn on static column mode and check if memory stops working.
  35. Thus, it is possible to put static column ZIPs into some of the sockets
  36. and fit the rest with page mode ZIPs. The operating system won't notice
  37. and run the whole show on static column mode. Things will appear to work
  38. fine, the customer won't notice immediately and the dealer will have
  39. saved a few bucks. This is bound to cause trouble, though.
